In Scotland, “Single Malt Whiskey” refers to whiskey made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery, among several other rules and constraints. Due in large part to the commercial successes of several internationally distributed blended scotch brands, single malts became coveted and a highly emulated style of world whiskey. American Single Malt is a new, federally recognized style of whiskey, and we are honored to be a part of the story as advocates and distillers. This newly recognized American version allows aging in oak casks of up to 700 liters, charred or not, used or new, allowing for a wide latitude of flavors within the category. Kings County has always leaned toward the traditional within the emergent category, twice distilled in traditional Scottish pot stills and aging in our own used bourbon cooperage. For this, the 9th release of a single malt whiskey from Kings County and the first to bear the American Single Malt designation, the blend is comprised of 25 total 15-gallon ex-bourbon barrels, 9 made with Eerie Pale Ale New York Craft malt and others made with a combination of Golden Promise and Chariot Peated malt. Aged between 3 and 6 years, this batch compares to lighter highland malts and Japanese whiskeys, with a broadly recognizable profile of tropical fruits, toasted oak, honey, and vanilla, and sweet smoke offering a testament to the expansive ambitions of the category. Balanced and sophisticated, it is an elegant whiskey and an important entry into any collection of early American Single Malts.
